Tasks to be done for our video

We are shooting on the 29th November all day. This is the beginning of our shooting and we should have many scenes completed by the end of the day. We have casted a new girl for our lead role, so there is no issues with clashing times. We will continue filming on the 30th November, this finishing off the scenes that were not completed on the previous filming day.

This is an idea of how our name would look if we had it printed onto t-shirts. We would have the font of our logo on the shirt for the real version. A way to progress this piece of advetrisement would be to do different images on the shirts. For example, we could have a band image on the front. Or have indivisual band members on the front.

Other forms of advertisement could include posters, with similar styles that are on the the t-shirts. We could aslo look at doing stationary for those teens who are still in school. Bags would also be a good form of advertisement. These are all good for our target audience because these are all things that teenagers have at that age.

- Photos of our cast and what their role is within the video

- Check the weather for the dates we will be filming

- Get to grips with how we are editing

Moodboard

From our mood board you are able to see that we have come to a decision for what we want to do.

- We have gone for a sci-fi/supernatural feel for our music video. Each member in the band has a power. We have chose the four elements of the Earth. We chose this because supernatural/sci-fi films and t.v are popular in this period of time, especially for the target audience we are going for.

- We have also chose to choose a modern sense of style. Even though we are trying to follow typical boy band codes and conventions, we want to try something a little different. This is with our own piece of clothing thats different to the other band members.

- The rest of the images just help show what our inspirations were with well known boy bands. The styles we have looked at for ideas. Also we have images of super hero films. These are ideas of inter-textual references we may include.

Rough Trade

roughtrade.jpg

1970:

- Rough Trade was created by Geoff Travis and started off in 1956, on the 20th February. It was a small small shop in West London.

- At the time, it was Punk rock that was the popular trend for Rough Trade.

- It started off as a small record shop, which wanted to be like a place in San Francisco. It eventually grew into a music distribution company for bands that no one had heard of.

- They used different techniques to expand the independent music scene. They played music of the unknown bands in the shops for people to hear. If they felt that the band had a good sound, they bought a set number of copies to sell to customers. They also mixed things up by introducing reggae music into the store. This attracted a wider range of customers. This was effective due to the are they were in.

-  Due to good reception from previous bands by the public, more unknown bands stepped up to be with Rough Trade. This eventually lead to Rough Trade become the best independent music label around.

1980:

- Rough Trade never had contracts for the band to sign. This meant that bands could come ond go as they pleased.

- If the bands became a big hit with the public, this aroused interest form the major music companies. This meant that bands were getting a better offer that they could not turn down. This lead to Rough Trade losing out on money. This may have been to the fact that they were no contracts enforcing their control on things.

- They then had to introduce contracts to insure they could keep the band and make a profit with records sold. There were not many demands on the contract at the time, but enough to insure they could bring in s profit.

- Rough Trades ideology was to never be like the main music industries. Though this changed when they had to bring in contracts. As much as they did not like the idea of this, it was what they had to do to progress for the future.

- Many bands helped lead to the success of Rough Trade. Stiff Little fingers was the first independent album to sell over 100,00 copies post its release. Also with bands such as Scritti Polliti, The desperate Bicycles, Buzzcocks and of course the Smiths, Rough Trade label was put on the map.

- Towards the end of the 80's, the independent music scene became obsessed with the rave scene.

- One factor that helped Rough Trade stand out from the other independent companies was the international widespread of Rough Trade offices.

1990s:

- The main problems that occurred at the start of the 90's, was when Administrators were called in. With the loss of their biggest act at the time, the smiths, Rough Trade were not making money. Many staff had to be axed due to them not being able pay. On June 1st Rough Trade stopped trading.

- Major record labels branched out to the independent labels by offering bands a contract to join. This was because Independent record labels were doing well and had a combined total of 40% of the music being released.

- Geoff Travis teamed up with Jeanette Lee to help bring back the Rough Trade name. They became managers of bands to start off with. It was when Pulp wanted to work with Rough Trade that they decided to bring Rough Trade records back to life. They helped Pulp get 5 top 10 singles when working with them.

- It was not until 2001 when Rough Trade signed new indie rock band from America, The Strokes. This lead to Rough Trade having one of the best new coming bands in the 21st Century. This marked the return of Rough Trade records.

21st Century:

- Rough Trade evolved by bringing in their biggest signing since The Strokes. When Duffy signed onto Rough Trade, she gave them their first number number one single in March, with her song 'Mercy'.

With countless Top 10 singles and albums, Over 50 past and present artists, 80 years plus of experience, this is our favored choice for the label for our boy band to be signed up to. If we are able to do as well as most of these bands, that will be a great success for us.

Music Brief

Smooth+criminals+brief+copy.jpg

We chose the Brief Smooth Criminals. We have decided to change the name of the band to Boyz '4' Now. Because there is  4 of us in the group, we seemed it was fitting to have something that matched the band. We have chosen 'Its gonna be me' By N Sync. This is because we want to be like like these previous band(s). They have had loads of success with they done, this is something we would like to emulate.

digipak Analysis- Lloyd Banks

UNFINISHED

Related bands

These bands are inspirations of what we want to be like.  For our video, we want to follow the typical codes and conventions seen in this video, but add our own look to it as well. We can see that in the video above, that in normal boy band videos there is usually a synchronized dance. This is something we have taken into consideration when looking for ideas about our video. Other typical conventions are when we see the look of the clothing. In these older type of videos, outfits followed the trend of fashion at the time. Looking at the clothes from now, they didn't look that great, but it still got the attention of the bands chosen target audience. We need to make sure that our target audience, will like the look of our style. This will help with the questionnaire, that we are currently giving out. Another factor that we are taking into consideration will be the style of our music video. When looking at previous boy band videos, for the most part they have a fun feel to them. But at the same time, they need to be serious in the way its presented, so that the band image is not questioned.

When we look at the video from Take That- It only takes a minute, this shows the serious, but fun feel that most previous music videos had. We can see a change in the style of videos from a couple of years with what happens in it. In this, typical conventions again would be the dancing in the scene. Its random with the fact that he's dancing around in a boxing ring. Although it seems random, it all means something. This is something we definitely need to get across in our music video. Another thing i have noticed in a lot of earlier boy band music videos, is that they have a fast paced/hectic like feel to them.

Digipak

What is a Digipak?

Its a case that is not made from plastic, but from cardboard instead. Can vary from many panels, e.g: 4-6.

Codes and Conventions

Typical codes and conventions would be the artist on the case. It would also include the track list, record label, Bar Code. It should also include the information on the spine of the case.

Record Label

The record Label would choose to use this because it is cheaper. This making it more economically better.

Summer Task

1957–1960

At the age of 15, McCartney met John Lennon and The Quarrymen at the St. Peter's Church Hall in Woolton on 6 July 1957. He formed a close working relationship with Lennon and they collaborated writing many songs. Harrison joined the group in 1958 as lead guitarist, followed in early 1960 by Stuart Sutcliffe on bass. By May 1960, they had tried several new names, including "Johnny and the Moondogs" and "The Silver Beetles", playing a tour of Scotland under that name with Johnny Gentle. They finally changed the name of the group to "The Beatles" in mid-August 1960 and recruited Pete Best at short-notice to become their drummer for an imminent engagement in Hamburg.

1960–1970: The Beatles

From August 1960, The Beatles were booked by Allan Williams, to perform at a club in Hamburg. During extended stays over the next two years, The Beatles performed as a resident group in a number of Hamburg clubs. On returns to Liverpool they played at the Cavern club. Sutcliffe left the band, so McCartney, reluctantly, became The Beatles' bass player. The Beatles recorded their first published musical material in Hamburg, performing as the backing group for Tony Sheridan on the single "My Bonnie". This recording later brought the Beatles to the attention of a key figure in their subsequent development and commercial success, Brian Epstein, who became their next manager. Epstein eventually negotiated a record contract for the group with Parlophone in May 1962. After replacing Best with Ringo Starr on drums, The Beatles became popular in the UK in 1963 and in the US in 1964. In 1965, they were each appointedMembers of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). After performing concerts, plays, and tours almost non-stop for a period of nearly four years, and giving more than one thousand four hundred live performances internationally] The Beatles gave their last commercial concert at the end of their 1966 US tour. They continued to work in the recording studio from 1966 until their break-up in 1970. In the eight years from 1962 to 1970, the group had released twenty-four UK singles and twelve studio albums, often released in different configurations in the USA and other countries.

After the break-up of The Beatles, McCartney continued his musical career, in solo work as well as in collaborations with other musicians. After releasing his solo album McCartney in 1970, he worked with Linda McCartney to record the album Ram in 1971. Later the same year, the pair were joined by guitarist Denny Laine and drummer Denny Seiwell to form the group Wings, which was active between 1971 and 1981 and released numerous successful singles and albums. McCartney also collaborated with a number of other popular artists including Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Eric Stewart, and Elvis Costello. In 1985, McCartney played "Let It Be" at the Live Aid concert in London, backed by Bob Geldof, Pete Townshend, David Bowie, and Alison Moyet.

paul-mccartney.jpg

It was announced in the 1997 New Year Honours that McCartney was to be knighted for services to music, becoming Sir Paul McCartney. In 1999, McCartney was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist and in May 2000, he was awarded a Fellowship by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. The 1990s also saw McCartney, Harrison, and Starr working together onApple's The Beatles Anthology documentary series.

Lesson 1 Notes

Media Studies
Music Video:

- A look into the technical codes and conventions of a music video.

Technical Codes:

- Camerawork. Camera movement, angle and shot distance all need to be analyzed.

- Editing- Fast cut montage grips the viewers. This assuring multiple viewing. CGI

- Chroma-key (Green Screen)

Andrew Goodwin:

1. Music videos demonstrate Genre characteristics.
2. There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals.
3. There is a relationship between music and visuals.
(Amplifies, illustrates, contradicts)
4. The demands of the record label will include the need for many close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which occur across their work. (A visual style)
5. There is a frequent reference to the notion of looking and partially voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
6. There is often intertextual referencing.

Lesson 2- Notes

Media

Analysis of music videos:

Jay Z- 99 Problems

Genre Characteristics:
- Urban setting- Brooklyn, NY, Jay Zs hood. Makes point by revealing name on hoody.
- Representation of a "gangsta" lifestyle- Cruising in cars, dog fights, loitering in streets, getting pulled    over by police, basketball and gangs.
- Street Dance/Free-styling
- Scantily Clad 'sexy' women- cheap looking, gold bikinis.
- Jail scenes- All inmates are black.
- Stereotypical race representations- White guy in suit, police officer is white, black people are in jail or are on the streets.
- Goes against convention of wealth, lacks fancy cars, bling, women etc.
- Women are a minor Element in this video. Usually a lot of women in hip hop videos.

Relationships between lyrics and Visuals:
- 'From the hood'- Jay Z pulls down hood.
- 'Radio'- Image of radio.
- 'Bitch'- Images of women.
-'Jay Z'- Points to himself.
- 'Fast Forward'- Moves hand along to demonstrate.
- 'Paparazzi'- Camera flash images of criminals identity shots.
- Clear and strong relationship between lyrics and visuals. Illustrates what we see, sometimes in a more subtle way.

Relationship between music and visuals:
- Music is hard hitting, aggressive-sounding with an emphasis on beat rather than melody. Visuals are also harsh looking and edits are fast paced to emphasis this aggression.

Influence of Record Label & use of close ups:
- Lots of shots of Jay Z- Not all close ups, but there are some.
- Close ups of other men as well. Aggressive looking.
- Shots of women are long shots/mid shots- because they're not important.
- Less emphasis on Jay Z on his own- he is an established artist and doesnt need as much exposure.
- Jay Z has his own record label as well as being part of Island Def Jam/Roccafella- quite independent. Evidence of less control by the label in this video than you might expect from a more mainstream/major label.

Notion of Looking:
- Jay Z puts his hand over the camera so that it seems as though the audience is looking through his fingers.
- X-Ray vision shot of money in boot- We can see through the boot.
- Scopophillic treatment of women is quite uncomfortable to watch- Seems totally unnecessary.
- Early establishing shots are almost point of view, creating the impression that the audience is looking around the hood.
- Video of Jay Z outside subway station.

Tenacious D- Tribute

Genre Characteristics:
- Comedic feel with the images shown.
- Performance with guitars is typical in a rock video.
- Topless Devil shows rock ideology.
- The video takes some characteristics but for a comedic effect.

Lyrics and Visuals:
- 'Hitch hiking down a long lonesome road'- Shows them walking down a deserted highway.
- 'Shined a shiny demon'- The Devil appears.
- The lyrics for the most part of the video shows a relationship between lyrics and visuals. The video tells a story of what they've seen.

Music and Visuals:
- Devil speaks when words are spoken on his part.
- When they go 'Ahhhhhhhh', a heavenly light appears behind them. This shows the battle between good and evil.
- Relationship between Music and Visuals is clearly seen when there is the guitar solo. The makes a guitar appear and plays.

Notion of Looking:
- When we hear the voices from outside the box. This is because we know whats going on the booth, whereas, others on the outside do not.
- Its like they are performing for us when inside the booth. Everything is inclosed and cramped.

Intertextual References:
- Dave Grohl plays the part of the Devil.
- Ben Stiller walks past when they bust out of the booth.
